What is a base currency?

A base currency is the first currency listed in a currency pair in foreign exchange trading. It serves as a reference point for the transaction and is used to express the value of the second currency, known as the quote currency. For example, in the EUR/USD pair, the euro (EUR) is the base currency, while the US dollar (USD) is the quote currency. This means that the price of this pair indicates how many US dollars are needed to purchase one euro. Understanding the base currency is essential for traders, as it influences how trades are executed and how profits or losses are calculated. Typically, traders will evaluate the strength or weakness of the base currency relative to the quote currency to make informed trading decisions.
