Market Depth

Market depth refers to the market's ability to sustain large orders without significantly impacting the price of an asset. It provides insight into supply and demand at various price levels.

Market depth is a crucial aspect of trading that illustrates the number of buy and sell orders in an asset at different price levels. Typically viewed through a market depth chart, traders can see how much volume exists at various prices, providing insights into market liquidity. A market that displays significant depth usually indicates a more liquid environment, where large trades can be executed with minimal impact on the asset's price.

For example, if a trader wants to buy 1,000 units of a currency pair and there are 500 units available at the current ask price and another 500 at a slightly higher price, the market is said to have a certain depth. If the trader proceeds with the order and the entire amount is filled without moving the price significantly, it reflects good market depth. Conversely, if filling the order causes a notable shift in price, it suggests limited depth. Related concepts include liquidity and order book dynamics, which further elucidate how price formation occurs in real-time trading.
