Maintenance Margin

Maintenance margin is the minimum equity required in a margin account to maintain open positions. It ensures that a trader has enough capital to support their leveraged trades.

Maintenance margin is a crucial concept in margin trading, referring to the minimum amount of equity that must be maintained in a margin account to keep positions open. This requirement serves as a safeguard for brokers, ensuring that traders have sufficient funds to absorb potential losses while engaged in leveraged trading.

Typically, when a trader's account equity falls below the maintenance margin, a margin call may be triggered. This scenario occurs when the value of the securities in the margin account declines significantly. In response, the broker may require the trader to deposit additional funds or liquidate positions to restore the account to the required level.

For example, if a trader has a maintenance margin of 25% and their position's value decreases, the equity in their account may drop below this threshold. The trader could then receive a margin call, necessitating prompt action to avoid forced liquidation of assets. Understanding maintenance margin is integral to effective risk management in trading.
