Futures Roll

Futures roll refers to the process of closing or liquidating a position in a futures contract that is nearing expiration and simultaneously opening a position in a longer-dated contract. This practice helps traders maintain exposure to an underlying asset.

Futures roll is a common practice among traders and investors in the futures market. When a futures contract approaches its expiration date, it becomes necessary to either liquidate the position or roll the contract to a later expiration date. Rolling a futures contract involves simultaneously closing the existing position and opening a new one in a longer-dated contract. This allows traders to retain their position without taking physical delivery of the underlying asset.

For example, suppose a trader holds a crude oil futures contract that expires in one month. As the expiration date nears, the trader may roll the contract by selling the expiring contract and purchasing a contract that expires in three months. This action ensures the trader maintains exposure to crude oil price movements while managing the risks associated with contract expiration.

Related concepts include contango and backwardation, which describe the relationship between futures prices and spot prices in different market conditions. Understanding these concepts can help traders make informed decisions regarding futures rolls to optimize their trading strategies.
